Saint Ambrose of Milan (c. 339–397 AD) was a bishop and one of the most influential figures in the 4th-century Church. Known for his eloquence, political courage, and deep defense of Catholic orthodoxy, he left a lasting mark on Christian theology, liturgy, and Church-State relations.
Often called the “The Honey-Tongued Doctor” Saint Ambrose was a master preacher and scholar. His intellect and deep spiritual explanations of Scripture played a pivotal role in the conversion of Saint Augustine of Hippo, whom Ambrose baptized in 387 AD. Beyond his preaching, Ambrose introduced congregational hymn-singing and liturgical reforms to the Western Church.
Saint Ambrose is one of the four great Latin Doctors of the Church, alongside Saints Augustine, Jerome, and Gregory the Great. His feast day is December 7.
